Abstract

Objective The aim of this study is to assess the incidence of women receiving additional urinary incontinence (UI) or overactive bladder (OAB) treatment, after undergoing a prolapse repair. Background Women with pelvic organ prolapse could have pre-existing or could develop UI and OAB symptoms. The incidence of postoperative SUI and urgency urinary incontinence (UUI /) OAB is already known. (SUI) can be treated simultaneously with POP repair. However there is a dilemma for the simultaneous treatment of SUI and POP repair. This combination treatment, is accompanied by complications. This raises the question mainly in the daily practice, how many women are treated for SUI or UUI / OAB after POP repair. Methods We conducted a retrospective chart review combined with a prospective evaluation of treatment and symptoms. We compared validated urogenital distress inventory (UDI) questionnaire pre- and postoperatively and gathered postoperative treatment via patient chart review. Results Three hundred and ninety eight women were analyzed. In a 2-4 year follow up information about treatment was retrieved for 390 and 287 women for respectively SUI and OAB. Ten percent of women received additional SUI treatment, of which 4% underwent surgical treatment. And 11% received OAB treatment of which 0.3% had surgical treatment. More women with preoperative UI received subsequent SUI treatment than women without preoperative SUI; respectively 15% versus 7% (Relative Risk [RR] 1.39 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-1.87). The same applies for OAB treatment, more women with preoperative UUI received treatment 15% than women without UUI 8% (RR 1.42; 95%CI 1.04-1.93). Conclusion A small number of women 10% and 11% receives postoperative treatment for additional SUI and OAB, respectively.
