Abstract
Background: An osteotomy is an orthopedic surgical procedure whereby a bone is cut and fixed in a corrected position. This procedure can be applied around the knee and is useful for the correction of bone deformities and shifting the mechanical leg-axis from the diseased towards the healthy compartment of the knee. In general varization osteotomies are performed in the distal femur. The lateral opening wedge osteotomy is technically easier to perform than its medial closing counterpart, but inferior in case of stability, bone healing and comfort. New applications with the existing osteosynthesis materials, osteotomy techniques and the addition of an additional screw may be able to change the inequality. Method: In this study we will test the biomechanical characteristics (stability end stiffness) of the TomoFix MDF II plate (specially developed for medial positioning) applied to a lateral osteotomy and a crescentic osteotomy of the distal femur. 24 composite replicate femurs, divided in four different configurations, will be tested in a biomechanical test setting, which simulates clinical loading and subsequently test to failure, without and with an additional compression screw. Movement of the osteotomy will be recorded by a 3D motion-analysis system and gives us the possibility to calculate the initial axial and torsional stability and stiffness of each configuration.
