Abstract

BACKGROUND - Nowadays, patients with a malignancy are commonly admitted to the Intensive Care Unit(ICU). The general outcome of ICU patients who suffer from cancer did improve over the last decades. To identify patients who will benefit of ICU treatment, knowledge of the current survival rates is important. As well, the contribution of the do not resuscitate(DNR) policy on the ICU mortality will be evaluated. METHOD - In this retrospective single center study 398 patients with an history or active malignancy were admitted during a period from June 24th until December 31th, 2017. The aim of this study was to investigate the ICU survival rate. Secondly, the hospital survival, 30-days survival and do not resuscitate(DNR) rates before and during admission were assessed. RESULTS – The overall ICU survival rate was 89%, the hospital survival 83% and 30-days survival 82%. This study showed a higher ICU-, hospital- and 30-days survival rate(p<0.001) in patients with an elective admission. DNR policy at admission was observed in 11% of the patients. Changes in DNR policy during admission in 10%. A higher mortality rate and higher Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(SOFA) was observed in patients with change in DNR policy during admission. CONCLUSION – In conclusion, this study showed an high ICU survival rate(89%) of the total population. A higher ICU-, hospital- and 30-day survival rate was seen in elective admissions. A higher SOFA score and mortality rate was observed in patients with change in DNR policy during ICU admission
