Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine determinants (e.g. age and position) of other-efficacy in a soccer team. Other-efficacy is the individual belief about a significant others' ability to perform a particular behaviour. Participants in the present study were 39 soccer players of the A and B youth team of a Dutch soccer academy. Other-efficacy was assessed halfway the soccer competition through a questionnaire. It was hypothesized that player age and player position in the field have a relation with other-efficacy. Other-efficacy was conceptualized as the frequency distributions of players named in an other-efficacy questionnaire. Three other-efficacy concepts were defined namely, specific skills necessary for soccer, qualities, and positive characteristics. Results showed that age had a low to strong relationship with other-efficacy beliefs of specific skills, qualities and positive characteristics. Furthermore, player position on the field had a significant effect on seven of the other-efficacy beliefs about specific tasks and on two of the other-efficacy beliefs about qualities necessary for soccer. In can be concluded that age and position contributed to the determination of other-efficacy beliefs in soccer. Research on determinants of other-efficacy is important for understanding dyadic enactment in soccer and could be a great benefit for practice, to better understand the team and their underlying beliefs. Further research on other-efficacy in relation to performance should be conducted.
