Abstract

Introduction This study compares priming with a Foley catheter and oral misoprostol for labor induction in the patient population of pregnant women induced at Martini Hospital Groningen in 2024. The aim of the study was to identify differences in maternal and neonatal labor outcomes. Based on previous studies, misoprostol may lead to a shorter labor but with an increased risk of adverse outcomes. The findings of this study may contribute to improved counseling and guidance for women undergoing labor induction at Martini Hospital Groningen in the future. Methods In this retrospective cohort study, 515 women who delivered in 2024 at Martini Hospital Groningen after induction with a Foley catheter, misoprostol, or oxytocin were included. The primary outcome was duration of labor. Secondary outcomes were type of delivery, 5-minute APGAR score, postpartum hemorrhage, episiotomy, and use of analgesia. Data were extracted from patient records and analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential tests depending on group size and comparability. Results Of the 515 included women, 371 were primed with a Foley catheter, 24 with misoprostol, 37 with both methods, and 83 with oxytocin. No significant differences were observed between the Foley catheter and misoprostol groups in labor duration (p = 0.571; 3 independent t-test), type of delivery (p = 0.714; chi-square test), postpartum hemorrhage (p = 0.489; chi-square test), episiotomy (p = 0.318; chi-square test), use of analgesia (p = 0.654; chi-square test), or 5-minute APGAR score (p = 0.740; chi-square test). Discussion This study did not identify significant differences in labor duration or maternal and neonatal outcomes between priming with a Foley catheter and priming with misoprostol. Potential explanations include the small sample size and group composition. While the findings are relevant locally, larger-scale research is warranted.
