Abstract

Background Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition defined by challenges in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors. People with ASD often struggle with emotion regulation and may rely on maladaptive strategies (MERS), such as self-injury and aggression. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may help foster adaptive skills and reduce MERS, but research on its use in ASD is limited. This study explores the relationship between acquired DBT skills, MERS, and emotional experience in individuals with ASD. Method In this observational study conducted within a single-case design, five participants with ASD participated in a six-month DBT treatment program. A modified diary card was filled out daily to assess DBT skills, MERS, and emotional well-being. The correlation was analyzed using regression models. Results At the individual level, no direct relationship was found between DBT skills and MERS or emotional well-being in any of the participants. Conclusion The results suggest that the use of DBT skills alone is not a predictor of MERS or emotional well-being. Other patient-specific factors may play a role. This highlights the variability between patients and supports the need for a more individualized approach.
