Abstract
Introduction: Many patients experience complications after a heart operation. So many hospitals in the Netherlands have focused on preoperative rehabilitation programs where they supervise and guide patients throughout the perioperative period with the hope that patients experience fewer complications in the postoperative period. The aim of this study was to compare the short term postoperative course of these patients with patients without any additional preoperative programs. Material and method: In this retrospective study we examined the postoperative hospital period of the patients with preoperative rehabilitation (REV, n=62) in contrast to patients without any preoperative program (CON, n=248). We compare both groups with the use of composite weighted endpoint of the postoperative surgical complications. Results: Patients of the REV group had a total of 15 points while the CON group patients had a total score of 53 points. This means that each patient has an average score of 0.44 (SD = 0.89) and 0.35 (SD = 0.83) in the groups, respectively (p = 0.62). If chosen to compare only the serious physical complications (score> 1), our analyses show that the CON group has 3.63% morbidity while this percentage is 3.23% in the REV group (p = 0.88). Conclusion: With our data we are not able to prove any significant advantage of preoperative rehabilitation program on the physical complication during the postoperative hospital period. There are more randomized controlled trials needed to make solid statements.
