Introduction: As-needed prescriptions of benzodiazepine agonists carry many high-risk side effects, such as excessive sedation, confusion and dizziness, for people with dementia. Guidelines have therefore been drawn up for prescribing benzodiazepine agonists in this group. However, little is known about as-needed prescribing of benzodiazepine agonists in people with dementia in practice and the extent to which guidelines are adhered to. Thereupon, in this study we gathered information about as-needed prescriptions of benzodiazepine agonists in people with dementia and compared these prescriptions with the guideline drawn up for this purpose. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review into on as-needed prescriptions of benzodiazepine agonists in nursing home residents with dementia in psychogeriatric wards. These prescriptions have been compared to the Verenso guideline 'Behavioral problems in people with dementia'. Possible differences in age, gender and type of dementia were also examined between residents with at least one and without a prescription that deviates from this guideline. Results: Of the residents with as-needed prescriptions for benzodiazepine agonists, 90.0% have at least one prescription that deviates from the Verenso guideline. Possible differences in types of dementia have been demonstrated between residents with at least one and without a prescription that deviates from this guideline. Conclusion: The majority of the necessary prescriptions of benzodiazepine agonists in people with dementia deviate from the guideline drawn up for this purpose. Additional research into the reasons and consequences is urgent to limit the risks associated with prescribing benzodiazepine agonists in people with dementia.
