Background: Dutch general practitioners (GP) can diagnose typical forms of dementia with the help of national guidelines, for difficult cases the elderly care physician or memory clinic can assist. Growing pressure on dementia care demands a more prominent role for primary care. Expectations of involved parties need to be assessed. What are the motivations of the GP, patient and their care partner, and how are those dealt with? Method: For this retrospective observational study, data was collected from electronic patient files. New patients with GP referral who were seen on the memory clinic between 01-11-22 and 01-11-2023 were included. Motivations of the GP, patient and their care partner were categorized, and inspected if sufficiently paid attention to. GP referrals were judged if adequate based on local and national guidelines. Results: 310 patients were included with a mean age of 75 years ± 9,35; 32-94 and usually lived independently with others (208; 67,1%). The most common referral motivations were “Contributing somatic or psychiatric factors” (77; 24,8%) and “Typical dementia diagnosis” (70; 22,6%). Half of referrals were adequate according to national and local guidelines. Often, no motivation was found for patients and care partners (resp. 53,5% (n=166) and 42,2% (n=134)). Conclusion: More than half of GP referrals were not adequate according to guidelines, usually asking for typical dementia diagnosis. Often no cognitive screening or heteroanamnesis was done before referral. For almost half of patients and care partners no motivation was found.
