Abstract

Introduction. Early Childhood Caries (ECC), also known as baby bottle caries, is a form of caries that affects young children. Consumption of bottled sugary drinks, especially at night, can contribute to the development of ECC. The WHO advises that sugary foods should only be consumed during main course. In reality, there are many products that convey the impression that they should be consumed at different times, for example, pajama porridge which is consumed before bedtime. With the arrival of the new food products consumed before bedtime, there is a risk of developing ECC. To date, it has not been investigated whether this is known to parents. This research examines the level of knowledge of parents with children between the age of 0-4 years about the development of caries in relation to feeding before bedtime and during the night. In particular, the consumption of pajama porridge is investigated. The aim of the study is to bring this to the attention of the parents, if it appears that the risks of the products on the development of caries are unknown to parents. On the basis of the research results, it may be possible to develop a preventive program for the health clinic regarding the brushing, eating and drinking regime around the bedtime ritual. Therefore, the following research question will be central in this study: To what extent does the level of knowledge of parents about caries influence consumption behaviour and habits around the bedtime ritual in 0–4-year-old children? Material and methods. Using a questionnaire with knowledge questions and behavioural questions, the knowledge level of parents and the consumption behaviour/habits of their children around the bedtime ritual is investigated. To examine the relationship between the consumption behaviour/habits before the bedtime of children between the age of 0-4 years and the level of knowledge of their parents, the OLS regression methodology is applied. Besides the level of knowledge of parents, it has been investigated whether the following factors are influential on the consumption behaviour/habits before bedtime: migration background of the parents, socioeconomic status of the parents and the mother's age at the birth of the first child. Results. The results of the OLS regression methodology suggest that parental knowledge level does not significantly influence bedtime consumption behaviour/habits. The mother's migration background is a significant confounder in the relationship between the knowledge level of the parents and the consumption behaviour/habits of the 0–4-year-old children, but the influence of confounding due to the mother’s migration background is limited. Conclusion. Parental knowledge level did not significantly seem to influence bedtime consumption behaviour/habits of the 0–4-year-old children. However, since the intended sample size was not met, this conclusion cannot be drawn with the accuracy that was aimed for.
