Abstract

Patients with hematologic cancers can be treated with hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) (1). They often develop acute and chronic oral complications due to their disease and HSCT-treatment, which could affect their oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL). The effect of HSCT on OHRQOL, and the connection between OHRQOL and the factors oral hygiene and xerostomia remains unclear (2, 3). The goal of this research is gaining more insight in the impact of oral complications after HSCT. Primarily, the effect of allogenic HSCT on OHRQOL will therefore be researched. Secondary, the connection between OHRQOL and the factors oral hygiene and xerostomia will be assessed. To assess this a prospective cohort-study was set up in which 13 adult allogenic HSCT-patients in the UMCG, between 30-7-2021 and 10-1-2022, filled out a composed questionnaire on 2 time points (10 days before and 49-70 days after HSCT). This questionnaire was composed out of an oral hygiene questionnaire, the Xerostomia-index (XI) and the EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-OH15. The outcome variables were the OHRQOL summary score (scale 1-100 in which 1=low OHRQOL and 100=high OHRQOL), the QOL summary score, the XI-summary-score, and the oral hygiene score. Statistical analysis was done using paired t-tests and Pearson correlation coefficients. The OHRQOL summary score was significantly decreased (-12,50) after HSCT (p=,013). There was no statistically significant change in the QOL and the degree of oral hygiene. Furthermore, there was no statistically significant correlation between the OHRQOL, oral hygiene, and xerostomia. There can be stated that, on the researched period, an allogenic HSCT has a negative effect on patients OHRQOL. Based on the results it can be recommended to conduct further research using a larger sample size, a longer follow-up, and additional clinical measurements of oral complications.
