Abstract

The key role that physical self-concept plays in influencing physical activity (PA) and physical fitness (PF) participation has been uniformly reported in the literature. Nevertheless, its mediating role in the relationship between PA and PF was very seldom a subject matter of investigation. The aim of this study was to examine the role of physical self-concept in mediating the cross-sectional relationship between PA (particularly MVPA) and PF in 27 Dutch adolescents (12-15 years). PA was assessed using accelerometry over 1 week. Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and muscular strength (MS) were assessed using the European Physical Fitness (EUROFIT) test battery. Whereas physical self-concept (i.e., athletic competence and physical appearance) was assessed using the Competence Experience Scale for Adolescents (CBSA). A partial correlation test was conducted to examine the association between PA and PF. The indirect relationship between PA and PF was examined using a bias corrected bootstrapping technique. All analyses were controlled for possible confounding variables (age, gender, BMI). Results indicated that there was a moderate positive correlation between PA and both CRF and MS. The indirect effect of PF indices on PA was mediated by perceived athletic competence, but not by physical appearance. Moreover, perceived athletic competence mediated the relationship between CRF and PA to a greater extent as compared to between MS and PA. Further research is warranted to determine the causal pathways of the indirect relationship between PA and PF. Keywords: physical activity, physical fitness, physical self-concept, adolescents
