Abstract
Background: There is evidence of hearing loss in the dental practitioners as a result of high noise levels generated by the ultrasonic scalers. These devices are used in daily practice for various purposes, such as in the removal of calculus and deposits. The dental professionals may be exposed by frequent use of the ultrasonic scaler to these sounds. Therefore they are at potential risk for the development of hearing loss. Objectives: The purpose of this research is to identify the noise level of the currently used ultrasonic scaler and to analyze whether this device meets the noise standard, according to the Dutch Working Condition Act (Arbowet). Method: The Ultrasonic Scaler Piezon Master/EMS® (piezoelectric) was used for this study. The noise measurements were made using sound measuring equipment G.R.A.S Sound & Vibration in combination with Svantek 979 sound-level meter (type 1). Noise levels were analyzed in a controlled area (acoustic area) and in a dental clinical setting. The results are obtained by the noise calculations and there are statistical tests carried out with the aid of SPSS. Results: First, the noise of the ultrasonic scaler tips are measured. A-tip produces 78.9 dB(A), P-tip 77.2 dB(A) and PS-tip 77.6 dB(A). The P-tip is selected to continue research with. The noise level of the ultrasonic scaler measured in a controlled area is 78 dB(A). This is in the clinical setting of 84 dB(A). The difference between the noise level measured in the control room and in the clinical setting was significant (p <0.001). This difference has been further investigated by measuring different sources in the clinical setting. In addition, the suction tube produced a noise level of 83 dB(A), water cooling system 57 dB(A) and air conditioning/background 45 dB(A). Noise level of the suction tube was considerable loud and increased with decreasing the working distance up to 100 dB(A). The total daily dose exposure was 60 dB(A). Conclusion: The noise level of the ultrasonic scaler exceeds the limit of 80 dB (A) in the clinical setting, but does not exceed eight hours of exposure time to 80 dB (A) (daily dose). Therefore, the noise level of the ultrasonic scaler meets the legal noise standard.
