Abstract

Within handball, multiple aspects of match demands are covered in specific training exercises, with the most common one being: small-sided-games (SSGs). However, it has not yet been investigated whether SSGs can be generalized to the most intensive game phases of matches and hereby prepare athletes accordingly. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether SSGs can mimic match demands, characterized by the most demanding game phases. Furthermore, differences between SSG types and playing positions will be assessed. 16 females and 12 males of national level performed 3 vs 3 half court, 4 vs 4 half court, 3 vs 3 full court, and 4 vs 4 full court SSGs. The number of passes, shots, duels, jumps, high-intensity distance (HID) and total distance are gathered from matches and the four different types of SSGs. Results showed not all SSG types are able to mimic the most demanding game phases. Furthermore, peak-intensity (most demanding minutes) of SSGs tends to mimic or even overrepresent the most demanding game phases better compared to average intensity (mean demanding minutes) of SSGs. Between the SSG types, full court SSGs allow for higher distance-based variables covered while half court SSGs allow for a higher performance of technical actions. Especially both 3 vs 3 half as 3 vs 3 full court SSGs are found to mimic the most demanding game phases the most. Differences are also found between SSG types and playing positions, indicating some SSGs work better for specific playing positions. Wings profit more from 3 vs 3 full court SSGs while backs and pivots profit more from 3 vs 3 half court SSGs. Coaches can use these different types of SSGs to reach their desired training outcomes for each position. However, SSGs might not represent the tactical gameplay of real matches. When SSGs are altered in a way to make them more match and position specific, they will be the ideal way to mimic most demanding game phases within handball.
