The current study examined the effect of expertise on affordance perception. Traceurs, practitioners of parkour, were compared to beginners as an expert group for affordance perception. In experiment 1 participants made estimations of their maximal riser height in different postures: sitting, sitting on an elevation, standing and standing on an elevation. No difference in estimation accuracy was found between experts and beginners. In line with Mark’s theory of eye-height scaling (1987), beginners made lower estimations in the sitting condition than in the other conditions. Traceurs only made lower estimations while perceiving maximal riser height while standing on an elevation. This suggests a difference in perceptual ability in experts which goes against the theory of eye-height scaling as proposed by Mark. In experiment 2 participants made estimations of their maximal precision jump distance. Again, no difference in estimation accuracy was found between experts and beginners. We conclude that expertise has an effect on perceptual skill, but further research is needed to show a stronger effect of expertise.
