Abstract

This study investigated the development of task and ego orientation in young talented soccer players and investigated if there was a difference between players who became a professional soccer player and players who became an amateur soccer player. A total of 242 soccer players aged 11-19 years participated in the longitudinal study. The players had 2-7 moments of measurements with a mean of 3.1 (SD = 1.2). The soccer players completed the Task and Ego orientation in Sport questionnaire (TEOSQ) annually. Analyses were conducted using multilevel analyses. This resulted in a predicted model u-curve development for task orientation, with the highest scores at age 11 (4.2) and at age 19 (4.1), and the lowest scores around age 15.5 (3.95). No significant difference between the professional and amateur players at adulthood playing level on ego orientation was found. Ego orientation developed exponentially from 3.2 (age 11) to 4.2 (age 19). The soccer players who became professionals scored significantly lower than the soccer players who became amateurs on task orientation. However, this difference was small (0.133), therefore, the difference might not be relevant because the difference was smaller than the individual variance. In addition, a follow-up study was conducted. 24 participants completed a follow-up questionnaire. A trend was visible for the participants still playing soccer scored higher on task orientation compared to the participants who quit soccer. Task orientation a trend to be higher for the participants who still play soccer, and ego orientation was shown to decrease with the decreasing current playing level. Besides, further research, performed consistently for all players over a longer period, for example also after the age of 19, can improve the insight on the development of task and ego orientation.
