Background/Aim Excessive load is a risk factor for injuries in sports. However, research is lacking in professional soccer on relevant load indicators for injury prevention. The aim of this study was therefore to examine the relationship between load indicators and injuries in professional soccer. Methods Data were collected from 19 professional male soccer players over one season. The used load indicators were rating of perceived exertion (RPE) multiplied by duration, total distance and high speed running distance (>20 km/h) (HSRD). One-, two-, three- and four-weekly loads and acute:chronic load ratios (i.e., one-weekly load divided by four-week rolling average weekly load) were calculated and split into low, medium and high groups. Generalized estimating equations modelled the association between load and injuries in the subsequent week. Results In total, 74 time-loss injuries were included. High two-weekly (>3800, OR: 2.87, 90% CI: 1.38 – 5.98) and three-weekly (>5583, OR: 2.05, 90% CI: 1.26 – 3.32) RPE x duration, high two-weekly (>58041, OR: 2.59, 90% CI: 1.34 – 5.02) and three-weekly (>85513, OR: 3.11, 90% CI: 1.65 – 5.85) total distance, high one-weekly (>909, OR: 2.11, 90% CI: 1.26 – 3.54) and two-weekly (>1744, OR: 2.25, 90% CI: 1.25 – 4.03) HSRD and high acute:chronic HSRD ratios (>1.2, OR: 2.29, 90% CI: 1.29 – 4.09) showed very to most likely harmful increased injury risks. Conclusions Increased RPE x duration, total distance and HSRD were associated with increased injury risk. Most indicative were two- and three weekly loads. The monitoring of provided load indicators is recommended for injury prevention in professional soccer. Keywords: soccer, workload, monitoring, fatigue, injury
