Children with ID are at increased risk of having low levels of physical activity, although children have to spend 60 minutes in MVPA every day. Schools are an important environment for promoting MVPA and include two sources of physical activity: physical education and recess. Guidelines state that children should spend 50% of physical education and 40% of recess in MVPA. The aim of this study was to measure the levels of MVPA during school time and whether the children reach the recommended guidelines. Another aim was to investigate the contribution of the two sources to the total physical activity during a schoolday. This study included 26 children (age 7-12 years) with an IQ below 80, recruited from a primary school for special education. Physical activity levels were measured with an accelerometer (ActiGraph GT3x+). Children wore the accelerometer during two schooldays: one with- and one without physical education. There was a significant difference between the mean levels of MVPA during physical education and during recess (31.56 and 18.32 minutes respectively). The results show that, during a day with physical education, children with intellectual disabilities already reached half of the recommended guideline of 60 minutes MVPA. The mean levels of MVPA were significantly higher during physical education (43%) than during recess (28%). The children did in general not reach the recommended guidelines during the two sources. From this study it can be concluded that children with intellectual disabilities were in general not active enough during school time, because they did in general not reach the recommended guidelines. Physical education contributed the most to total physical activity, which can be due to the structured nature of physical education.
