Abstract

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the ‘Evaluation of a Motivational Interviewing Session focused on Exercise and Sports’ (EMIS-ES) questionnaire. The EMIS-ES was intended to measure patients’ evaluations of motivational interviewing (MI) sessions, in which sports consultants targeted to stimulate an active lifestyle for people with a physical disability and/or chronic disease by using MI. METHODS: A confirmatory factor analysis using completed questionnaires from 318 patients of the large Dutch ‘Rehabilitation, Sports and Active lifestyle’ (ReSpAct) study was performed to study the factorial validity of the EMIS-ES. Using a different sample, 25 tailored face-to-face consultations between sports consultants (N = 6) and patients (N = 25) were audiotaped, for subsequent analysis with the MITI 3.1.1, a measure for MI fidelity. Further, these patients were asked to fill out the EMIS-ES and the HAQ-II, a measure for therapeutic alliance, immediately following the consultation. Convergent validity of the EMIS-ES was assessed by calculating correlations between the EMIS-ES and the MITI and between the EMIS-ES and the HAQ-II. EMIS-ES scores between two groups of sports consultants, differing in judged MI skills and the amount of MI training and experience, were compared to study the discriminative ability of the EMIS-ES. RESULTS: The EMIS-ES, consisting of four intercorrelated subscales, shows acceptable model fit. No significant correlations were found between the EMIS-ES and the MITI 3.1.1. Significant correlations were found between the total EMIS-ES score and the HAQ-II score and between the subscale Partnership and the HAQ-II. No differences in EMIS-ES scores were found between the two groups of sports consultants. CONCLUSION: The EMIS-ES consists of four interrelated subscales which are based on the theory of motivational interviewing. The EMIS-ES demonstrated no convergent validity with the MITI. However, the EMIS-ES displayed convergent validity with the HAQ-II, and therefore seems to measure aspects of therapeutic alliance. But results should be interpreted with caution, due to the small sample used in this study and the lack of variation on scores of the EMIS-ES and HAQ-II.
