Abstract

Cultural differences have been found to exist in optical illusions. However, it is to date unknown if such cultural effects on illusion bias manifest in action. One study that showed an illusion effect on action was in golf putting with the Ebbinghaus illusion (Witt, Linkenauger & Proffitt, 2012). Therefore, we reconstructed Witt’s golf study. We did so in pétanque and in two different cultures. Hong Kong students (n = 18) and Groningen students (n = 30) looked from a 3.5m distance at a picture of the Ebbinghaus illusion and judged the target size and threw a ball to the target. The shown picture was randomly alternated between all three variations (no surround, small balls as surround and big balls as surround). Trying to learn more about the mechanism behind optical illusions in terms of perceptual thinking style and inclination to learn explicitly, the participants also filled in the Analytic Holistic Scale and the Movement Specific Movement Scale questionnaires. The illusion effect was indeed observed in perception in the expected direction and a marginally significant effect was present in action, but in the direction opposite to the one found in Witt’s study. Perceptual thinking style and inclination to learn explicitly do not seem to play a role in the influence of culture on the illusion effect on perception or action. Possible explanations for the results and further research are discussed. Key words: cultural differences, Ebbinghaus illusion, optical illusion, perception and action, two visual streams.
