Background: Children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) are at risk of low levels of physical fitness and thereby at increased risk of developing (cardiovascular) diseases. To our knowledge no treatment exists which aims to improve physical fitness in children with DCD. Aim: To develop a treatment program aimed at improving multiple components of the physical fitness of 6 to 12 year old children with DCD. Method: Information obtained from literature review and a focus group session was combined. PubMed and PsycInfo were searched for background information on DCD, exercise physiology, physical activity and physical fitness in children. The focus group consisted of eight experts in the field of DCD and/or training of physical fitness. The findings were analyzed within the framework of a dysfunction and a treatment theory. Results: Treatment targets are multiple component of physical fitness: cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength and anaerobic power. The corresponding active treatment ingredients (2*60 min/week, 8 weeks) are: (a) high intensity interval training (30 minutes) based on running, (b) resistance training based on body weight (10 minutes) and (c) plyometric training (10 minutes) (warming up and cooling down each 5 minutes). Throughout the treatment program the intensity of the exercises will be increased. Discussion: This is the first study to develop a treatment program that targets multiple components of physical fitness in children with DCD. Further development and evaluation of the treatment may provide insight in the trainability of physical fitness in children with DCD and improve the rehabilitation program of children with DCD.
