Abstract

Several physical tests used in studies with demented elderly have not been tested on their reliability in this population. Therefore, the test-retest reliability of the FICSIT-4 scale, the Figure of Eight (FoE), the Timed Up and Go (TUG) and grip strength is investigated. A total of 17 demented older persons participated in this study. Based on the results of neuropsychological tests, they were divided in a less (n=7) and a more cognitive impaired group (n=1 0). Each participant performed the physical tests 4 times. Results show for most tests good to excellent test-retest reliability. Only the number of outsteps on the FoE showed a fair test-retest reliability. There were no significant differences found between the groups. The reliability between measurement 1 & 2 did not significantly differ from the reliability between measurement 3 & 4. In conclusion, the test-retest reliability of the FICSIT-4 scale, the FoE, the TUG and grip strength ranges from fair to excellent in a population of demented older persons and does not seem to depend on degree of cognitive impairment. The major limitation of this study was the small number of participants. Consequently, these results cannot be generalised to the total population of demented older persons.
