Malignant lymphomas are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms consisting of multiple distinct subtypes. These subtypes can be classified according to the WHO classification of lymphoid neoplasms. Numerous epidemiological studies based upon the WHO classification have been conducted, showing substantial differences in subtype frequency around the world. This research project was undertaken to determine the epidemiology of malignant lymphoma and its disease course in the Caribbean island Curaçao. Another objective of this analysis was to provide a description of used treatment modalities and outcomes. Data was gathered from the only pathology department and hospital in Curaçao involved in oncology. We found a low incidence of non-Hodgkin lymphomas compared to Western countries, but comparable to other Caribbean islands. A large proportion of high-grade B-cell lymphomas were observed as is seen in other developing regions. Furthermore, a high incidence of T-cell lymphoma was found with poor survival. When considering the predominantly Black population of Curaçao, these findings were as expected. In conclusion, the results of this analysis were in accordance with findings in existing literature and have helped to increase understanding of malignant lymphoma in Curaçao.
