Abstract

Background Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) is used to treat a variety of end-stage elbow pathologies. Follow-up of TEA consists of clinical evaluation of the patient and radiological evaluation of radiographs. These radiographs are assessed through different assessment methods. The reliability of these assessment methods is often unknown. Our objective was to determine the inter- and intraobserver reliability of the most commonly used assessment methods following TEA. Methods An inter- and intraobserver reliability study of the most commonly used assessment methods following TEA. A total of 29 radiographs of patients who received a Latitude TEA were included. The agreement was determined by means of intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for continuous data and Cohen’s kappa (k) for categorical data. Seven Dutch orthopedic surgeons were invited to participate in this study. Results A total of 29 radiographs were evaluated by three orthopedic surgeons. Varying reliabilities ranging from poor to excellent were found for the agreement of the different assessment methods. Conclusion This study gave a first impression regarding the reliability of the radiological assessment in TEA. We observed varying inter- and intraobserver agreements. For future studies we suggest to include more observers.
