Abstract

Introduction Biopsychosocial aspects of penile detumescence (the onset of flaccidity after cessation of the erection) are probably important to (future) patient populations, but remain to be investigated. This pilot study aims to exploratively investigate the duration of penile detumescence in the general Dutch-speaking population on the basis of a measurement in the familiar situation. Methods A survey was spread through several social networks. Volunteers were asked to start a stopwatch measurement after orgasm took place, and they were asked to stop the measurement when they perceived their penis to be completely flaccid. In the survey, participants were also asked to provide information about five other variables. Results The mean (+ standard deviation) of the duration between orgasm and the onset of flaccidity was 57.9 (35.5) seconds and the mean duration between orgasm and complete flaccidity was 180.7 (83.5) seconds, measured by 83 volunteers. According to statistical tests, the amount of satisfaction had a possible effect on the complete duration of penile detumescence. Discussion The data suggests that the duration of penile detumescence can be adequately measured. Future studies can use this study in order to show whether the duration of penile detumescence is quicker or slower in different groups. This might be of importance in detecting early penile pathology, which leads to better intervention and better quality of life. Conclusion This pilot study is an important first exploration of the duration of penile detumescence in the general Dutch population, but future investigations are needed to further develop the ideas presented in this article.
