Abstract

Introduction: Commonly, preterm infants and their parents are separated on the neonatal ward and parents are perceived as visitors. Additionally, the care for their infant is usually performed by health-care professionals. In our neonatal ward facility we have Single Family Rooms providing parents with the possibility to stay with their infant 24 hours a day during the complete hospitalisation of their infant. Also, a Family Integrated Care model was developed in which parents are trained and supported to be the primary care giver of their preterm infant. Objectives: To study the effect of Family Integrated Care in Single Family Rooms on growth in preterm infants and parental stress. Study design: We conducted a prospective intervention cohort study in three hospitals. We studied preterm infants and their parents who were admitted for at least one week (7 days) in one of the three participating centres. Results: In the intervention site 97 infants were investigated and 93 infants were investigated in the sites with Standard Care. No significant differences were observed considering growth. These results remained insignificant after adjusting for gestational age, post- NICU status and Apgar score of <7 at 1 minute. Stress experienced by mothers at discharge was significantly lower in the Family Integrated Care group (mean 52.4 vs. 62.7; p = 0.033). This difference stayed significant after correcting for gestational age and post- NICU status (-12.35 (95% CI =-22.32 – -2.39); p = 0.016). No significant differences were found in stress experienced by fathers. These results remained insignificant after correcting for gestational age and post- NICU status. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate no negative consequences on growth resulting from Family Integrated Care in Single Family Rooms and a positive effect on maternal stress. This implicates a promising effect of Family Integrated Care in Single Family rooms.
