Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of social contacts and motivation in long term behavioural change after participation in the GALM project. In addition, the long term outcomes of GALM participation on mood, loneliness, health and physical disability were examined. Methods: In this cohort study two groups of older adults were enrolled: a group of older adults still participating in GALM (n=112: mean age 66.5 years, 54% men) and a group of former GALM participants (n=24, mean age 67.5 years, 46% men). Measurement instruments used were the Exercise Self Regulation Questionnaire (SRQ-E) for measuring motivation, the Groningen Activity Restriction Scale (GARS) for measuring physical disability, the Profile of Mood States (POMS) for measuring mood, the Social Support for Physical Activity Questionnaire (SSP AQ) for measuring social support and the Loneliness Scale (LS) for measuring loneliness. Results: MANCOVA (covariates are age and sex) indicated that GALM participants had statistically significant better scores on the determinant intrinsic motivation (F = 5.82, p = 0.018, ~ = 0.667) and on the effects physical disability (F = 9.08, p = 0.003, ~ = 0.848), depression (F = 5.98, p = 0.016, ~ = 0.679) and total mood (F = 6.52, p = 0.012, ~ = 0.716) compared with former GALM participants. Discussion: Intrinsic motivation was the main determinant for older adults to continue to participate in GALM. GALM participants also scored statistically significant better on a number of quality of life outcomes compared with former GALM participants. Finally, former GALM participants continued to participate in physical activity, which is in in tune with the original aim of GALM.
