Background: Until recent metal-on-metal hip resurfacing arthroplasty (M-o-MHRA) was an attractive alternative for conventional total hip arthroplasty. Although good short-term results, latest outcomes showed possible complications and caught the attention of the media. Does the attention in the media affect patients with a metal-on-metal hip resurfacing arthroplasty? Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study. We investigated if patient’s physical functioning, measured with patient reported outcome measurements (PROMs; HOOS and RAND-36), was affected by concerns about complications driven by the media. In addition we investigated if clinical outcomes, cobalt blood levels and radiographic abnormalities, affected the patient’s physical functioning. Results: In total 103 patients, mean age 58,5 year (SD 7,2), received 128 metal-on-metal hip resurfacing arthroplasties. There was a significant relationship between media information and concerns on the possible complications with M-o-MHRAs (P = 0,008). In addition there was a significant relation between the level of concern on the complications and physical functioning as measured with the total HOOS scores (P<0,001). No significant relationships were found between patient’s physical functioning and clinical outcomes. Conclusions: This study shows that media-driven concerns about complications on M-o-MHRAs have a negative effect on perceived physical functioning and quality of life in patients with a M-o-MHRA.
