Abstract

Background: Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is an heriditairy condition that leads to a high risk of developing coronairy heart disease (CHD) at a young age. Early treatment with lifestyle changes and statin treatment can stop or even reverse the development of CHD. According to the guideline is a LDL-cholesterol (LDL-c) below 3,5 mmol/L for children needed to establish previously mentioned. Also it points out that a statine should be started at the age of 10 years old in a low dose to achieve the best possible result. Aim of the study: There are two groups of children with FH, one from the hospital in Leeuwarden (MCL) and the other from the hospital in Den Bosch (JBZ). The MCL treats children according the guideline and starts with lifestyle changes before a statin is considered. In contrast to the MCL, the JBZ starts directly with a statin. These groups are compared according to the age at which a statin is started and the LDL-c after 6 and 12 months treatment with a statin. Results: The MCL start at a mean age of 13,89 years (N = 18) with a statine and the JBZ at 10,81 years (N = 62). The LDL-c after 6 months of statin treatment is for the MCL group 3,77 mmol/L and for the JBZ group 3,62 mmol/L. After 12 months this is respectively 3,86 mmol/L and 3,59 mmol/L. Conclusion: Lifestyle changes results in a delay in the age at which a statin is started. The LDL-c below the 3,5 mmol/L as mentioned in the guideline is not established in both groups after 6 and 12 months of treatment.
