ENGLISH Background: Literature about the early-deafened, late-implanted (EDLI) cochlear implant (CI) users is limited, mainly because this is a not (yet) frequently implanted population. We investigated audio-visual communication and the use of different cues in EDLI and post-lingually deafened CI users. The ultimate aim is to create an evidence based, implantation protocol for EDLI in the UMCG. Materials and methods: 11 EDLI and 7 post-lingually deafened CI users were selected and tested in the anechoic chamber of the ENT department in the UMCG. A set of 36 sentences was presented to the participants using three modalities: 1) Audio only 2) Visual only 3) AudioVisual combined. The participants were asked to repeat the sentence as accurately as possible and guess if uncertain. The primary outcome was the percentage of correct recognized words within the sentences. Results: Post-lingually deafened CI users score better in de Audio (97.80%) and AudioVisual (97,33%) modality compared to EDLI (Audio 67.42% and AudioVisual 78.86%). For the Visual modality EDLI outperform the post-lingually deafened, 26.34% compared to 5.4%. Conclusion: These findings show that the selected EDLI in this study have benefit of their CI, but to a smaller extent than post-lingually deafened. It also shows that the EDLI have a better speech perception with the addition of visual cues than without visual cues. Also EDLI are more trained in perception of visual cues than post-lingually deafened. Implantation of the early-deafened selected using the UMCG protocol, seems to be beneficial.
