Abstract
Background: During the regular follow-up of patients treated with head and neck irradiation at the UMCG, an impaired oral health situation is found more often after referral for dental care to the general dental practitioner. These problems are caused primarily of secondary due to the radiotherapy. This study is executed to clarify the current dental situation and the role of the general dental practitioner, because of a lack in overview over this group of patients and indistinctness over the long-term dental treatment. This study answers the question ‘What is the role of the general dental practitioner in the oral health care of irradiated patients?’. It is also used to describe the teamwork of the UMCG, the general dental practitioners and the head-neck irradiated patient. Purpose: To evaluate the role of the general dental practitioner within the long term dental care of a head-neck irradiated cancer patients. The aim was to find improvements to optimize the long-term dental care process for these patients. Method: In this study a survey is used for general dental practitioners, who treated at least one head- and neck irradiated patient. By using statistical analysis and descriptive statistics, the outcomes describe the current situation of dental treatment of irradiated head- and neck patients with regard to the role of the Center for Special dental care in the UMCG, the general dental practitioner and the irradiated patient. Results: The role of the general dental practitioner in the dental care process of irradiated patients is good. There is no link found between their knowledge, the method of referral from the UMCG, the amount of dentist’s experience, dentist’s certainty and fear, and the occurrence of oral/dental complications after irradiation. Only the difficulty of treatment is related to these problems. Evidence shows that patients are insufficiently informed about the responsibilities by each healthcare professional, based on insufficient communication. Conclusion: This study concludes that not only the general dental practitioner is important for long-term dental healthcare, but also the patient himself and the hospital. De dentist is sufficiently capable of treating irradiated patients. Improvement of communication between dentist, patient and the hospital needs to be achieved. Patients are not sufficiently informed about the responsibilities of all the health care professionals. Also the dentist and the hospital do not always inform each other to full extend. The recommendation is to approve the communication between the stakeholders.
