Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate the relation between perceived competence and actual competence in scholastic and athletic domains. On this relation the influence of gender and peers was investigated. Furthermore, the aim of this study was to check to what extend the measurement of perceived competence was reliable for children with speech and language difficulties. To investigate the influence of peers, 42 children attending regular education (mean age 8.59 years, SD 0.77) and 46 children attending special education for speech and language difficulties (mean age 8.72 years, SD 0.87) were compared. The children completed the Dutch version of Harter's SelfPerception Profile for Children (SPPC) to measure perceived competence, EUROFIT battery to measure actual athletic competence, and Arithmetic Number Fact Test and One-minute reading test to measure actual scholastic competence. Children attending special education also completed the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance (PSPCSA). The results revealed that actual scholastic competence and the actual athletic competence was influenced by gender and peer group. Neither gender nor school influenced perceived competence. In conclusion, no effect of gender and peer group was found for perceived competence. The effect of gender and peer group was only found on actual scholastic competence and actual physical competence.
