Abstract
Introduction: Due to the problem of dental care for elderly dependents, there is a plea for a more extensive, preventive and curative dental care. Several studies have shown that oral care in these institutions is not sufficient. The adverse oral health for some elderly in nursing homes can be partly attributed to the lack of facilities for dental care within these institutions, but is also characterized by a lack of care in the period before inclusion in the nursing home. An improvement in dental care in these institutions is therefore urgent and necessary. Caregivers often encounter common barriers while providing dental care for the elderly. Lack of knowledge, skills, time and motivation of the nursing staff as well as defensive attitude by the residents are often cited as an obstruction to providing the necessary dental care. Aims: The aim of this study is to map the attitudes, knowledge and possibilities of caregivers with regard to dental care within nursing homes in the Netherlands. This study will provide an annex to document the current state of affairs. Material and Methods: 270 questionnaires were personally handed to the caregivers within a nursing home, of which, 50 questionnaires were succesfully completed and returned. The questionnaire was (successfully) validated through factor analysis and reliability analysis. Significance is assumed on the basis of Chi-Square (p = 0.05), Independent-Samples T Test (p = 0.05) and ANOVA (p = 0.05) Results: The majority of respondents is female (94%) and in the age category of >40 to s 55 years of age (40%), is either nurse of caregiver(individual healthcare) and has been working in this particular nursery/nursing home? for~ 5 years (80%). Conclusion: This study shows that the knowledge of caregivers working within nursing homes is moderate. The caregivers experience insufficient opportunities to apply proper dental care to their clients, but most of the caregivers do have a positive attitude to dental care. Based on this study the conclusion can be drawn that there are no significant differences within the groups' attitude, knowledge and capabilities in relation to education, gender, age and number of working years. Keywords: oral healthcare, nursing, knowledge, attitude, nursing homes
