Abstract
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the roughness of the enamel surface after debonding, using a one or two-step fmishing procedure for removal of the residual resin. In this study the following hypothesis was tested: the two-step resin removal method results in less roughness of the enamel surface than does the conventional one-step method. Material and Methods: The samples consisted of 24 human premolars which were extracted for orthodontic purposes. The buccal surface of each premolar was divided into 2 parts - the left and right area. A lower incisor bracket was bonded on each area of the crown. After 48 hours the brackets were debonded. The two different residual resin removal techniques were: Group 1: The left surface of each sample was fmished and polished with a tungsten carbide bur operating at high speed with water coolant. Group 2: The right surfaces of the samples were first treated with a tungsten carbide bur at low speed. After this, the enamel of the teeth was polished with the composite polisher (Shofu company, Japan), with air-cooling and a low-speed drill. After removal of the resin, the roughness of the enamel surface was measured with a surface profilometer (Form TalysurfPGI 830). The recorded measurements were displayed in the form of roughness parameters (Ra and Rz). Ra displays the amplitude average roughness on the surface of the teeth. Rz displays the mean roughness of the teeth, measured over 5 measuring lengths in 1 observation. Also an independent t test was done with SPSS. Results: The mean Rain group 1 was 2,59Jlm and 1,80Jlm in group 2. The mean Rz in group 1 was 13,64Jlm and 9,00Jlm in group 2. The t test shows a significant difference in roughness between group 1 and group 2 (P<O,OO 1 ). The surfaces of group 2 were significantly smoother than group 1. Discussion and conclusion: On the basis of the results of this study, it can be concluded that the use of the tungsten carbide bur at low speed, followed by the Shofu composite polisher provides the smoothest surface. The hypothesis can be validated. It can be stated that the use of the one-step finishing procedure for removal of residual bonding in the orthodontic practice should be omitted.
