Objective: A Dutch questionnaire for measuring quality of life in children 0-8 years old with a visible or invisible cleft and/or rhinolalia aperta does not yet exist. The main objective of this study was the development and validation of the K(N)UZS-8; a questionnaire which can be used in measuring the influence of cleft on social, psychological and physical functioning. Methods: A quantitative validation study in the Medical Centre Leeuwarden. Parents from children aged 0-8 years with a (in)visible cleft or/and rhinolalia aperta were asked to fill in a 68-questions survey. To construct this questionnaire, experts, parents and the support group were consulted. The following phases were passed: 1) identification of dimensions (question deleted if ≥50% answered ‘‘not applicable’’) 2) determination of subscales (KMO >0.6), 3) determination of reliability (Cronbach’s α >0.6) and 4) determination of internal validity through a test-retest procedure (Pearson >0.7). Results: 129 parents were contacted, of which 80 returned questionnaires could be analyzed. Altogether 13 questions were deleted because they were answered ‘‘not applicable’’ ≥50%. Due to the validation process, 12 questions were deleted. As a result, 43 questions were classified in 4 subscales: satisfaction about functioning of the cleft team, surgery, social and psychological functioning and (dis)abilities in daily life. The factor structure was sufficient with a KMO-score of >0.6 on each subscale for all items. Internal validity enclosed Cronbach’s α coefficients ranging from 0.699 to 0.955. The test-retest correlation coefficients by Pearson ranged from 0.737 to 0.910. Conclusions: Due to this questionnaire it was possible to obtain an idea about the quality of life and patient satisfaction in the target group. The results of the validation process conclude that it is very likely this questionnaire is valid and useable. This may also be assumed in future research.
