Abstract
Background: Chest pain is one of the most common reasons for admission to an emergency room. The symptom presentation, of an acute coronary syndrome, can be very wide. There may be differences in the symptoms, between men and women. Despite many research, the exact differences and the cause of the differences stays unclear. The patients presenting at the emergency room, have passed selection filters, such as the general practitioner and the ambulance service. The expectation is that there is no longer a gender difference, when the patients reach the emergency room, regarding the chest pain symptoms caused by a cardiac condition. The research question of this study is: “Is there any difference in cardiac symptoms between men and women how present at the emergency room of the UMCG, with the suspicion of a cardiac cause of the symptoms? If so, what is the difference?”. Methods: Data from 2415 patients were collected, including 733 patients with a cardiac cause of the symptoms and 1682 patients with a non-cardiac cause of the symptoms. The data were analyzed using univariate and multivariate regression models. Results: Of those patients with a cardiac cause of the symptoms, women are on average 5.2 years older and are more likely to have hypertension and diabetes mellitus, compared to men. Men more often have a history of myocardial infarction. Women present significantly more often with pain localized in the back and with dyspnea symptoms, than men. Conclusion: This study shows key differences in symptom presentation between men and women, presenting at the emergency room of the UMCG, with a cardiac cause of chest pain.
