Abstract
Fear of needles is a reason for avoiding vaccinations, even for parents, who play an important role in the therapy compliance of their children. Attunement to parents by the healthcare professional could possibly lead to a trustful relationship, adding to better therapy compliance. A lot of research goes on reducing vaccination related pain, but often the related experiences of parents are left out. To measure these experiences, the parent satisfaction and attunement to parents by the healthcare professional were measured during a conducted research regarding the effects of formula feeding as pain reduction during a child’s first vaccinations. This was measured with the Quality of care through the patient’s eyes (QUOTE) questionnaire. Parents and their children were divided into two groups, holding a control group in which care as usual was given regarding pain relief, and an intervention group in which care as usual was given with supplemental formula feeding during the child’s first vaccinations. Before the visit parents assessed their adhered importance on different items for the care aspects attitude, empowerment and vaccination. Afterwards parents were asked to assess these items again, but then for the extent to which they had experienced those items. By combining these scores, a Quality Impact Index (QII) could be calculated. In both groups the quality of care was assessed as high regarding parental satisfaction, as well as regarding attunement to the parents by the healthcare professional. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups for any of the three care aspects. However it’s not possible to draw any conclusions, due to insufficiently sized research groups. Therefore the need for additional research in this direction remains.
