Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the possible effect of piezoelectric scaling on pulpal temperature. Materials and methods: Thermal sensors were placed in the pulpal chamber of 20 extracted permanent molars. Following root surface instrumentation of the samples, with or without water irrigation, the temperature rise was recorded in degrees Celsius °C. Two test groups (with water irrigation / without irrigation) were then compared with each other using statistical analysis. Data analysis : Upon collecting the data a normality test (the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test) was applied. The test indicated that the data was normally distributed; hence a paired t-test was used to determine whether the two test groups were significantly different from one another. Results: Rise of pulpal temperature rise was observed in both test groups after 20 seconds of ultrasonic instrumentation with piezo-electric scalers . The mean of the temperature rise in test group with water irrigation was 1.27°C (TΔ w), while the mean of the temperature rise in the control group was 2.00°C (TΔ zw). This difference in temperature was found to be statically significant (t(19) = -2.843; p=0.01). Conclusion: Instrumentation with piezo-electric scalers with water irrigation after 20 seconds causes significantly less temperature rise compared to the same period of instrumentation without irrigation.
