Introduction The ERAS protocol provides perioperative guidelines which aim reduced complications after liver surgery and thereby accelerating patient recovery. This study evaluates the effects of the of the ERAS protocol and describes the implementation. Material & Methods After the implementation, 28 patients who underwent liver-surgery received care according to the ERAS-protocol. These patients are compared with a historical control-group of 40 patients who underwent similar operations. Length of stay is compared between the two groups and the primary outcome of this study. Results Median length of stay was 6 days in the ERAS-group and 8 days in the controlgroup (p=0.026). 75% of the ERAS-group was complete mobile on the third day after surgery and 46.4% tolerated a normal diet on day two after surgery. The number of postoperative complications was 21.3% in the ERAS-group and 45% in the controlgroup (p=0.070). 53.6% from all the patients in the ERAS-group was able to leave the hospital at, or before postoperative day 6. Conclusion The ERAS-protocol has been implemented successfully on the HPB department of the UMCG. In this researchgroup, length of stay is significantly two days shorter in the ERASgroup, compared to the controlgroup. Giving care or receive care following the ERASprotocol is safe. Further research is desirable to get a larger sample size.
