Objective: Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is increasingly diagnosed in adults, including women of childbearing age. However, little is known about the effects of ADHD in mothers and the use of ADHD- medication during pregnancy on the communicative and motoric development of children aged 4. This retrospective cohort study uses the Dutch Van Wiechenonderzoek (VWO) to evaluate the development of children from mothers with ADHD during their first 4 years of life. Method: The medical files of children and their mothers were collected at Isala Ziekenhuis Zwolle and the GGD Ijsselland. Permission was acquired. Women with multiple pregnancy or addiction were excluded. Women with a psychiatric diagnose or women using medication which is not considered safe during pregnancy were excluded from the control group. Results: 72 Women with ADHD and their children were included, of which 36 women used ADHD-medication during pregnancy, and 32 were included in the control group. Corrected for smoking during pregnancy and gender no differences were found between the development of children from women with or without ADHD, as well for the development of children from women who used or didn’t use ADHD-medication during pregnancy. Conclusions: This study shows unambiguous results in which ADHD in mothers and the use of ADHD-medication during pregnancy seems to have no influence on the development of the young child. To our knowledge, this has not earlier been investigated in the same way, and thus provides a first understanding of the influence of ADHD in mothers on the development of the child according to the VWO.
