Abstract

Objective: Sleep disorders are common in Parkinson’s disease and are affecting quality of life. The problems are easily overlooked and therefore not treated adequately. The aim of this study is to measure the effect on quality of life in Parkinson’s disease when paying attention to sleep problems and treating them structurally. Methods: 56 patients in the intervention group and 29 in the control group were included. History was obtained and the stage of disease was assessed (Hoehn & Yahr stage, UPDRS motor score). Scales were used to assess the quality of life (PDQ-39) and sleep disorders (SCOPA-sleep, PDSS-2, ESS). The intervention group received a sleeping diary and some patients required additional investigations. After this, sleep hygiene measures and, if necessary, additional therapy were started. In both groups the UPDRS motor score and scales were repeated after eight weeks. Results: Within group comparisons from baseline to termination revealed a significant improvement in the PDQ-39 for the intervention group (p= 0,002). When dimensions of the PDQ-39 were analyzed, significant improvement was found for ADL (p= 0,003), emotional well-being (p= 0,004), cognition (p=0,030) and communication (p= 0,008). Comparison of the two groups only showed a significant greater improvement for emotional well-being (p= 0,015) and communication (p= 0,040). Sleep problems measured with the SCOPA-sleep and PDSS-2 seemed to improve. No changes were found for the ESS and UPDRS motor score. Conclusion: Paying attention to sleep problems in Parkinson’s disease and treating them effectively leads to a short term improvement of quality of life.
