Abstract

Objective: The aim of this systematic review is to search for the best available evidence and evaluate on that basis the effect of presurgical nasoalveolar moulding on children with a cleft lip and palate. Design: Systematic review of the literature concerning presurgical nasoalveolar moulding in children with a cleft lip and palate. Interventions: In 1993 Grayson described a new way of presurgical orthopaedics. This therapy, called presurgical nasoalveolar moulding (PNAM) and combines an intra-oral device with moulding of the nose. Results: The performed search resulted in fifty-three titles. Twenty articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were therefore included in this review. These articles were read by two reviewers. Conclusions: The overall conclusion is that PNAM seems to have a short term positive effect on the growth of the alveolar segments as well as on the symmetrical growth of the nose. However, the differences between pre and post treatment characteristics were not always found to be statistically significant. Because the absence of specifically designed RCT's concerning PNAM, recommendations for future research were made.
