Hand complaints often occur in people who work with their hands professionally. Partly these complaints can be explained with biomechanical factors. The thought is that certain anthropometric hand characteristics (AHE) are more likely to cause complaints. This has not yet been demonstrated and there were questions about the measuring instruments used. A reliable and usable measuring method is one of the requirements to be able to demonstrate the causality between AHE and complaints. For some time, attempts have been made to estimate the risk of musculoskeletal complaints on the basis of AHE. The pragmatic hand evaluation (PHE) has been developed for this. Despite the benefits of the PHE, recent research has shown that it is not sufficiently reliable to use for individual screening. Mesuring a PHE costs a lot of training and test time. In this study a modified PHE method with fewer disadvantages was searched for. For this purpose, images of hands were made twice with three devices (Spreeuwers-cabinet, mobile phone and flatbed scanner). The images were measured by two assessors and by a computer program. The intra- and inter-rater reliability was, in addition to the measurement error, calculated using 'intraclass correlation coefficients'. In addition, an estimate was made of the usefulness of the various techniques via a questionnaire. The survey revealed that the flatbed scanner was the most reliable (measurement error <5 mm and an ICC of 0.8), the mobile phone scored highest for usability. Given the poor reliability of the mobile phone, the scanner became the preferred method. The computer program can measure the PHE just as reliably as humans.
