Abstract

Background: Aggressive behavior of adolescents is a problem for both society and the youth. Aggression is sometimes divided by function; proactive aggression and reactive aggression. Some adolescents who exhibit aggressive behavior also have psychopathic traits. Research has shown that people with psychopathic traits tend to respond less well to different treatments. This study investigates whether the degree of psychopathic traits affects the decrease in total, proactive and reactive aggressive behavior after treatment. Method: This study was conducted in 70 adolescents in a closed treatment setting. There were 31 boys and 39 girls. The average age was 15.5 years (SD = 1.8). Psychopathic traits were measured before starting treatment with the Youth Psychopathic traits Inventory (YPI). Aggressive behavior was measured before and after treatment with the Reactive-Proactive aggression Questionnaire (RPQ). Results: There was no significant decrease in aggressive behavior after treatment. As for psychopathic traits, callous unemotional (CU) traits had no significant effect on the decrease of total, proactive and reactive aggressive behavior. The domains impulsive and manipulative showed a trend for an effect. A higher score on the impulsive domain predicted less decrease in total and reactive aggressive behavior, a higher score on the manipulative domain predicted decrease in total aggressive behavior. Conclusion: The amount of CU-traits is not predictive for the decrease in aggressive behavior after treatment. The trend of influence that both the manipulative and the impulsive domain show indicates further research for these domains and offers good hope for the future. Psychopathy remains an important concept to understand aggressive behavior better.
