Abstract
Background: Nasally administered oxytocin has repeatedly been found to have positive effects on social behavior in healthy adults. Important for social behavior is the ability to experience affective empathy and this ability is seriously impaired in autistic individuals. To see if oxytocin can enhance affective empathy in autistic individuals, information is required about its effects on affective empathy in healthy individuals. Method: The effect of oxytocin on affective empathy was investigated in 30 healthy men by measuring the neurofysiological responses to affective visual stimuli after administration of oxytocin and placebo. The response to positive, negative and neutral pictures with and without humans was analysed using event-related-potentials (ERP’s). We investigated the N2 peak, a component which is thought to represent automatic processing of affective information. Results: The N2 was found to be sensitive for positive and neutral pictures if they portrayed humans. When looking at negative pictures the N2 was found to have sensitivity regardless of the presence of humans. There were no significant effects of oxytocin on the N2 ampitude in response of affective stimuli. Conclusion: The results suggest that nasally administered oxytocin has no effects on the early processing of affective stimuli, measured by differences in N2 amplitude.
