Abstract

Patients with Parkinson’s disease experience a great variety of symptoms; not only the characteristic motor-symptoms are important, also non-motor symptoms could have a substantial impact on the quality of life. Dopaminergic medication eases symptoms, but pharmacotherapy is complicated by disabling fluctuations and dyskinesia due to smaller therapeutic windows. Therefore, complicated medication schedules are necessary. This study assessed the impact of a medication review by community pharmacists on quality of life of patients with Parkinson’s disease. This interim analysis of a randomized control study assessed the influence of a medication review in a period of 6 months in patients and their informal carers. A total of 182 patients are randomized in intervention- and control groups. The primary outcome criterion was quality of life assessed using PDQ-39 and EQ-5D questionnaires. Secondary outcome criteria were non-motor symptoms (assessed by NMSQuest), state of health (by VAS), and quality of life of the informal carer (PDQ-Carer). Every dimension of PDQ-39 presents an impairment of quality of life in 6 months, with statistical significance in dimension 2; daily activities (P = 0,01). However, there was no difference between the intervention- and control group. Furthermore, there was no significant difference between groups in 6 months on the EQ-5D, NMSQuest, VAS, and PDQ-Carer scores. However, the mean quality of life of all informal carers deteriorated in 6 months (P < 0,001). This interim analysis demonstrates the negative effect of time on the quality of life of patients with Parkinson’s disease, nevertheless no benefit of a medication review is observed. Future research with a larger research group should determine if the conclusions maintain and will focus on assessing the cost-effectiveness of the medication review.
