Abstract

Background Since the definition of participation by the World Health Organization in 2001, the interest in participation increased. Participation is important and indispensable for children, especially for children with physical disabilities. Until now no measuring instrument is available to measure the participation of preschool children with and without physical disabilities. This study examines the construct validity and test-retest reliability of the Dutch Pre-School CAPE for preschool children with and without physical disabilities. The Pre-School CAPE is a 45-item assessment that consists of 4 subscales based on activity type and of arranged activities in two domains (formal/informal). The PreSchool CAPE measures the diversity and intensity of children's participation over the past 4 months. Method Ninety-three children from 2 to 6 years old were included in the validity study; 27 children with physical disabilities (mean age 3.3 ± 1.2 years) and 66 children without physical disabilities (mean age 3.2 ± 0.9 years). Since there are no other measures of participation available, construct validity was examined using six hypotheses based on participation literature. The test-retest reliability analyses were tested with 71 children; 24 children with physical disabilities and 47 children without physical disabilities. Results Physical disabilities and age of the child affected the participation of preschool children. Sex and number of siblings of the child had no effect on the participation of preschool children. Level of participation of preschool children was not related to the level of family income and not to the presence an accessibility of facilities. The test-retest reliability for all groups were substantial to almost perfect for almost all domains and activity types except the formal domain for children with physical disabilities. Conclusion The results of this study provide evidence for the construct validity and test-retest reliability of the Pre-School CAPE for preschool children with and without physical disabilities.
