Abstract

Background This study is pa:rt of a series of studies which focuses on the effect of nutrition on unexplained symptoms in children, for which no (good) therapy is available. This study focuses on fatigue, without clear underlying cause. Previous studies in this research line show that a nutrition advice with green vegetables, beef, whole milk and cream butter has a positive action on recurrent upper airway infections and on subclinical hypothyroidism in children(1)(2)(3). In these studies, children had subjective less symptoms of fatigue after taking the nutrition advice. In this study, we try to objectify these findings. Methods: Children between 2 and 18 years old were recruited for this prospective controlled trial. All children had symptoms of fatigue, without underlying cause. The children were divided in an intervention group, in which they followed the nutrition advice, or in a control group in which they had an expectative treatment. The follow-up time was at least three months. Primary outcome measurements were fatigue symptoms, objectified with the PedsQL Multidimensional Fatigue Scale. Results: 98 children were included in this study; 50 children got an intervention, and 48 children were controls. The Per Protocol Analyze showed a significant decrease in sleep/rest fatigue in the children from the intervention group compared with the controls (P=0,009). The analyze showed a trend in the decrease in general fatigue and cognitive fatigue. Green vegetables seemed to have the biggest influence in the decrease of fatigue; children who ate green vegetables according to the nutrition advice had, comparing to children who didn’t eat green vegetables, a significant bigger decrease in general fatigue (P= 0,046), in sleep/rest fatigue (P=0,031) and in cognitive fatigue (P=0,007). Conclusion: This study shows the trend that the nutrition advice is effective in the treatment of fatigue in children, especially in the sleep/ rest fatigue. Especially green vegetables have great importance. The nutritional advice with green vegetables, beef, whole milk and cream butter seems to be a good treatment in unexplained fatigue in children.
