Abstract
Background Despite its beneficial effect on palliative patient’s wellbeing and quality of life, spiritual care is not provided by physicians in an organized manner. Moreover, little is known about how Dutch physicians relate to the spiritual dimension of palliative care. Specific training could increase the quality and frequency of spiritual care. This study evaluates the practical effects of a Dutch pilot training in spiritual care in the provision of palliative care by physicians. Methods Physicians from four top clinical hospitals were asked to take part in a pilot training spiritual care and complete surveys on job satisfaction, personal spirituality, barriers and competences regarding spiritual care both before participating and one month after participating in the pilot training. In addition, ten physicians were interviewed about their experiences with regard to spiritual care in palliative care. Results Thirty-two physicians participated in the baseline survey, eleven in the survey one month after. No significant difference was observed regarding spiritual care competences and barriers before and after the training. The interviews showed that all physicians regard paying attention to their patients’ spiritual needs as an important part of palliative care and integrate this into their daily activities. However the extent to which spiritual care was provided and the level of competence varied between physicians. Participating physicians indicate that the pilot training increased attention to the spiritual dimension of palliative patients. Conclusion No evidence was found that the pilot training enhanced the spiritual care competences of physicians. The pilot training appears to increase attention to the spiritual dimension of palliative care. Physicians regard paying attention to their patients’ spiritual needs an important part of palliative care. Customized training as well as on-site practical training could enhance the individual competences in spiritual care.
