Abstract

Introduction: The K(N)UZS-8 is a measure developed by the department of Plastic Surgery of the MCL to analyze Quality of Life (QoL) and patient satisfaction in 0-8 year old patients with cleft lip/palate (CL/P) as treated by a CL/P-team. This study’s objective was to determine differences and similarities in the CL/P population of 0-8 year olds as treated by CL/P-team Noord, and to test whether the questionnaire brings reproducible results. Methods: The K(N)UZS-8 was distributed by mail, answered by parents. It is divided into 4 domains with 13 subfactors. The domains are; 1) Patients satisfaction with functioning of CL/P-team, 2) Patient satisfaction with operative results, 3) QoL on social/psychological area, 4) QoL on physical functioning. A comparison was made between two locations of the CLP-team, and between subgroup fenotypes; bilateral CL/P, unilateral CL/P and invisible cleft palate. Results: 187 responders were included. The total population is satisfied/very satisfied regarding the functioning of the CL/P-team. The total population is satisfied with the operative results and scars, however the respondents of the UMCG gave an overall higher rating on the question about operative scars in general(p<0.001). A similar trend was found in domain 3 where respondents of the UMCG scored higher on the questions about acceptance of cleft by peers/ family(p<0.001). On the domain of QoL physical functioning respondents with bilateral CL/P scored significantly lower than those with a unilateral CL/P(p=0.024). Conclusion: The K(N)UZS-8 is the first “Patient reported Outcome”(PRO)-measure specifically developed for young children with a CL/P that tests QoL and patient satisfaction with the treatment team. It is important to individualize cleft care and to pay attention to area’s that might be problematic for, for instance children with a bilateral CL/P.
